Installs and maintains electrical systems in buildings. A Handwerk trade with the defining German twist: you may be employed freely, but you may not run your own business without a Meister.
| Official title | Elektroniker/in für Energie- und Gebäudetechnik |
| Protected title | Employment: no. Self-employment: yes — Handwerksordnung Anlage A |
| Category | skilled-trades |
| Typical qualification | Duale Ausbildung, 3.5 years, Gesellenprüfung |
| Regulated | Meisterpflicht for self-employment |
| Last reviewed | 2026-09 |
The Meister rule
This trade sits in Anlage A of the Handwerksordnung, the list of trades considered hazardous or consumer-critical. Consequences:
- As an employee: no recognition needed. A competent electrician with foreign training can be hired immediately.
- To run your own business: you must be entered in the Handwerksrolle at the Handwerkskammer, which normally requires the Meisterbrief — or an exemption (Ausnahmebewilligung), or employing a qualified Betriebsleiter.
This is the single most consequential fact for anyone planning to be self-employed.
What the job involves
Installing wiring, distribution boards and building systems; commissioning and fault- finding; increasingly photovoltaics, battery storage, heat-pump electrics and EV charging infrastructure, which is where demand has exploded. Work is on-site, physical, and governed tightly by VDE norms — especially VDE 0100.
Qualification route
- 3.5 years dual: employer plus Berufsschule
- Entry: Hauptschulabschluss in practice; formally open
- Paid throughout: roughly €900–1,300/month gross depending on year and region
- Ends with the Gesellenprüfung (IHK/HWK journeyman’s exam)
- Then optionally the Meisterprüfung — 1–2 years, part- or full-time, covering trade practice, theory, business administration and training qualification. Aufstiegs-BAföG part-funds it and several states refund fees on passing (Meisterprämie/Meisterbonus).
Pay
| Stage | Gross/month |
|---|---|
| Geselle, newly qualified | €2,800 – €3,300 |
| Geselle, experienced | €3,300 – €4,000 |
| Meister (employed) | €4,000 – €5,000 |
| Meister with own business | Highly variable; a well-run Betrieb outearns most graduates |
Regional spread is wide — southern Germany pays best. Overtime is abundant. Note that the trades’ real advantage is the business ownership ceiling, not the employed salary.
Demand
Very high, and structurally so. The Energiewende — solar, storage, heat pumps, grid work, EV charging — has created more demand than the trade can train for. This is one of the most persistently unfilled occupations in Germany.
Foreign-trained candidates
- To be employed: no recognition legally required. In practice, a Gleichwertigkeitsfeststellung from the Handwerkskammer (under the BQFG) helps with pay grading and with the visa.
- To be self-employed: you need Handwerksrolle entry. Foreign qualifications can be assessed for equivalence to the Meisterbrief, and there is an exemption route (Ausnahmebewilligung, §8 HwO) based on documented experience — it is discretionary and not quick. EU/EEA nationals have an easier path under §9 HwO and the qualifications directive.
- Language: B1–B2. Site safety, VDE norms and customer contact all run in German; this is not a trade where English gets you through.
- Visa: skilled-worker route with a recognised qualification, or an Ausbildung visa (§16a) to train here. Electricians appear on shortage lists, which helps.
Pitfalls
- Assuming employment requires recognition — it does not, and waiting for paperwork wastes months of earning.
- Assuming self-employment does not — it does, and people discover this after registering a business.
- Foreign electrical training frequently does not cover VDE, which is the actual standard your work is judged against. Expect a real learning curve regardless of experience.
- “Elektroniker” vs “Elektriker”: the modern formal title is Elektroniker with a Fachrichtung. Ads use both.
