Elektroniker/in für Betriebstechnik (Industrial Electrician)

Keeps a factory’s electrical systems running. Same trade name as the Handwerk electrician, different chamber, different tariff, better pay — and no right to open a business.

Official title Elektroniker/in für Betriebstechnik
Protected title No
Category industrial
Typical qualification Duale Ausbildung, 3.5 years, IHK exam
Regulated No — but see Elektrofachkraft status below

Not the same trade as the Handwerk Elektroniker

Two parallel systems train electricians:

  • Handwerk — Elektroniker/in with a Fachrichtung (Energie- und Gebäudetechnik, Automatisierungs- und Systemtechnik, Informations- und Telekommunikationstechnik, and since 2021 Gebäudesystemintegration). Handwerkskammer, Anlage A, Meister for self-employment.
  • Industrie — Elektroniker/in für Betriebstechnik and its siblings (Automatisierungs- technik, Geräte und Systeme, Maschinen und Antriebstechnik, Gebäude- und Infrastruktursysteme). IHK, industrial employers, IG Metall.

See the category README for what follows from that.

What the job involves

Installing, commissioning and maintaining the electrical side of production plant: switchgear (Schaltanlagen), power distribution, drives, motors, sensors and actuators, and PLC (SPS) fault-finding. The core of the role is Instandhaltung — keeping lines running and diagnosing faults fast, because downtime is the thing the plant is actually paying you to prevent.

Production runs around the clock, so shift work and Rufbereitschaft are normal and are a significant part of take-home.

Elektrofachkraft (EFK): under DGUV Vorschrift 3, only a qualified Elektrofachkraft may work independently on electrical installations; an elektrotechnisch unterwiesene Person (EuP) may do only narrowly defined tasks under instruction. Your Ausbildung makes you an EFK. This is a safety-law status attached to the person, not to the job title — and it, not the title, is what gates the work.

Qualification route

  • 3.5 years dual, industrial employer plus Berufsschule, IHK exam
  • Entry: mittlerer Schulabschluss typical; formally open
  • Paid throughout: roughly €1,150–1,400/month gross at IG Metall employers, among the better-paid trainings
  • Ladder: Industriemeister Elektrotechnik, staatlich geprüfte/r Techniker/in (Elektrotechnik), or a part-time Bachelor. Large employers routinely part-fund these.

Pay

IG Metall / IG BCE tariff, ERA-graded. Market estimates — see the category README for why these cannot be verified against a single scale. Approximate gross monthly, 2026:

Stage Gross/month
Newly qualified (tariff-bound) €3,300 – €3,900
Experienced €3,900 – €4,700
Industriemeister / Techniker €4,700 – €5,800
Instandhaltungsleitung €5,500 – €6,800

Plus a 13th-month payment, holiday pay, a 35-hour week in the metal and electrical industries, and shift and on-call supplements on top. Compare the total package against the Handwerk electrician‘s €2,800–€4,000 rather than comparing base salaries.

Non-tariff industrial employers pay considerably less. Ask which agreement applies.

Demand

High and broadening. Automation, semiconductor and battery plants, grid and substation work, and the general shortage of maintenance electricians all pull in the same direction. Instandhaltung is also comparatively automation-resistant: it is the function that fixes the automation.

Foreign candidates

  1. To work: nothing required. The occupation is unregulated.
  2. For the visa: IHK FOSA equivalence assessment of a foreign qualification.
  3. EFK status is a separate matter from recognition: the employer must satisfy itself you meet DGUV V3 requirements before letting you work unsupervised. Foreign training often does not map to German standards, and a top-up assessment is common.
  4. Language: B1–B2. Safety instruction, VDE norms, documentation and shift handover are all in German.

Pitfalls

  • This qualification does not let you open an electrical business. That needs Handwerksrolle entry for the Anlage A trade, normally via the Handwerk route and a Meisterbrief. People discover this after registering a Gewerbe.
  • Tariff vs. non-tariff changes the package by 20–30%, not by a few percent.
  • VDE norms are the standard your work is judged against, whatever your experience elsewhere.
  • Shift and on-call are a large share of pay — and of the job’s cost to you. Read the Schichtplan before signing.
