Mechatroniker/in (Mechatronics Technician)

Builds and maintains systems that are mechanical, electrical and software at once. Germany’s flagship combined trade, and one of the most internationally portable qualifications in this repo.

Not Kfz-Mechatroniker

Kraftfahrzeugmechatroniker/in — the car mechanic — is a different occupation: a Handwerk trade in Anlage A, trained under the Handwerkskammer, with a Meisterpflicht for self-employment. Mechatroniker/in without a qualifier is the industrial trade described here. Job ads shorten both to “Mechatroniker”. Check which one an advert means before applying, and check which one a certificate says before assuming equivalence.

What the job involves

Assembling, commissioning, maintaining and modifying mechatronic systems — production lines, robot cells, conveyor and handling systems, packaging and process machinery. In practice that means mechanical assembly and alignment, pneumatics and hydraulics, electrical installation and wiring, sensors and actuators, PLC (SPS) programming and diagnostics, and commissioning against a specification.

The trade was created in 1998 by merging mechanical, electrical and IT training — one of the first of the modern combined occupations, and the template for several since. Its appeal is that it sits precisely where the three disciplines meet, which is where most modern production faults actually live.

Common settings: machine builders (Maschinen- und Anlagenbau), automotive and suppliers, semiconductor and battery plants, food and pharma process lines, and increasingly Inbetriebnahme (commissioning) roles that travel to customer sites worldwide.

Qualification route

  • 3.5 years dual, industrial employer plus Berufsschule, IHK exam
  • Entry: mittlerer Schulabschluss typical
  • Paid throughout: roughly €1,150–1,400/month gross at IG Metall employers
  • Ladder: Industriemeister Mechatronik, staatlich geprüfte/r Techniker/in, or a part-time or dual Bachelor in Mechatronik. Employers commonly part-fund these, and the dual-study route is well established in this trade specifically.

Pay

IG Metall / IG BCE tariff, ERA-graded. Market estimates — see the category README. Approximate gross monthly, 2026:

Stage Gross/month
Newly qualified (tariff-bound) €3,400 – €4,000
Experienced €4,000 – €4,800
Inbetriebnehmer / service abroad €4,500 – €5,800 + allowances
Industriemeister / Techniker €4,800 – €6,000

Plus the 13th month, holiday pay and a 35-hour week at tariff employers. Commissioning roles that travel add substantial tax-free per-diems and are the fastest way to raise earnings early — at the cost of being away a great deal.

Demand

Among the strongest in the repo, and structurally so. Automation, robotics, and the build-out of semiconductor, battery and pharmaceutical capacity all consume mechatronics skills faster than the system trains them. The trade also sits on the right side of automation: it installs and repairs the machines that displace other work.

Foreign candidates

  1. To work: nothing required. Unregulated.
  2. For the visa: IHK FOSA equivalence assessment.
  3. This is the most portable trade qualification here. Mechatronics is taught internationally on broadly similar lines, German machine builders operate worldwide, and the German qualification is recognised well beyond Germany — useful if you may not stay.
  4. Language: B1–B2. Machine documentation, safety instruction and shift handover are in German, though commissioning teams working at customer sites abroad often operate in English.

Pitfalls

  • The Kfz confusion above — two different occupations, two different chambers.
  • Tariff vs. non-tariff is worth 20–30% of the package. Small machine builders are often outside the agreement.
  • Commissioning travel is lucrative and genuinely hard on life outside work. Ask how many nights a year the role actually involves, not what the job ad implies.
  • Specialising too narrowly on one manufacturer’s controls (Siemens, Beckhoff, Rockwell) limits mobility. Keep breadth deliberately.
