Fachkraft für Schutz und Sicherheit (Security Specialist)

The three-year qualification above the §34a courses. Legally it unlocks nothing extra — its value is progression, supervision, and being a recognised occupation at all.

Shorter variant Servicekraft für Schutz und Sicherheit — 2 years, toppable up
Protected title No
Category security
Typical qualification Duale Ausbildung, 3 years, IHK exam

What it adds over a 40-hour course

Legally, very little: the §34a tiers still govern what you may do, and the Ausbildung covers the Sachkunde content. What it actually buys:

  • It is a recognised Ausbildungsberuf, so it supports a §18a skilled-worker visa — which the Unterrichtung does not. For a non-EU candidate that is the whole difference.
  • Progression. Objektleitung, Einsatzleitung, planning and key-account roles go to qualified staff.
  • Breadth: security technology and alarm systems, fire protection, legal foundations, risk assessment, planning a guarding concept rather than executing one.

What the job involves

Beyond guarding: assessing a site and designing the guarding concept, specifying and operating security technology, coordinating teams, liaising with police and fire services, managing incidents and the documentation that follows, and increasingly access-control and CCTV systems administration under DSGVO constraints — surveillance is heavily regulated in Germany and getting it wrong is a data-protection matter.

Qualification route

  • 3 years dual, security firm plus Berufsschule, IHK exam
  • Entry: mittlerer Schulabschluss typical; formally open
  • Paid throughout: roughly €1,000–1,250/month gross
  • Ladder: Geprüfte Schutz- und Sicherheitskraft (IHK), Meister für Schutz und Sicherheit, or Fachwirt routes into security management

Pay

Market estimates — see the sector README on the AEntG branch minimum:

Stage Gross/month
Newly qualified €2,700 – €3,400
Experienced €3,100 – €3,900
Objektleitung / Einsatzleitung €3,500 – €4,500
Meister für Schutz und Sicherheit €4,000 – €5,200
Security management, corporate €4,500 – €6,500

Corporate Werkschutz — in-house security at industrial sites — pays above contracted guarding and often sits under the site’s own tariff, which is a large difference.

Demand

Strong and growing: critical-infrastructure protection, data-centre and logistics sites, events, and public-sector contracts. The contracted end of the sector competes hard on price, which suppresses pay; the in-house and specialist end does not.

Foreign candidates

  1. To work: §34a compliance as for any security role. No professional recognition needed.
  2. For the visa: this qualification is recognisable — IHK FOSA equivalence, then §18a. That is the key difference from the unqualified route.
  3. §34a Sachkundeprüfung is still a German legal exam.
  4. Reliability check requires a clean record, including from your home country.
  5. Language: B2. Reports, legal limits, DSGVO obligations and coordination with authorities.

Pitfalls

  • Contracted guarding vs in-house Werkschutz is the biggest pay difference in the sector.
  • The qualification unlocks progression, not powers — the §34a tiers still apply.
  • DSGVO exposure is real for anyone running CCTV or access data.
  • Price-driven contracts mean some employers cut corners on training and equipment; ask what the firm funds.
