Retail and commercial banking: accounts, payments, lending and investment advice. The title is free, but specific activities require BaFin registration — another case where regulation attaches to the task, not the job name.

What is actually regulated
Anyone can be employed as a Bankkaufmann/-frau. But if you give investment advice, you personally must be:
- demonstrably competent (Sachkundenachweis), and
- registered with BaFin in the employee register, under §87 WpHG and the Mitarbeiteranzeigenverordnung (MaAnzV)
The same applies to sales staff and compliance officers. Complaints against you are recorded in that register. Outside banks, insurance intermediation needs §34d GewO and financial investment brokerage §34f GewO.
This is the Berufskraftfahrer pattern in a suit: the job title is unprotected, and the thing that gates the work sits somewhere else entirely. Check what is being controlled, not what it is called.
Separately, Geldwäschegesetz (GwG) obligations apply to the whole sector, and a clean Führungszeugnis is a practical precondition for employment.
What the job involves
Account and payment services, consumer and mortgage lending (Kreditgeschäft), securities and investment advice (Wertpapierberatung), and cross-selling of building-society and insurance products. Specialisation follows quickly: Privatkunden (retail), Firmenkunden (corporate — the best-paid advisory track), Kredit, Wertpapier, or Compliance and back office.
Increasingly the branch-facing part of the job is advisory and sales; routine transactions have moved to apps and self-service.
Qualification route
- 3 years dual, bank plus Berufsschule
- Entry: mittlerer Schulabschluss or Abitur; Abitur is the norm — banking is among the most credential-competitive Ausbildungen
- Paid throughout: roughly €1,150–1,400/month gross, among the better-paying trainings
- Ends with the IHK Abschlussprüfung
- Ladder: Bankfachwirt/in, then Bankbetriebswirt/in, or a part-time Bachelor. Banks fund these readily; they are the standard route to advisory and management grades.
Pay
Three different tariff worlds, and which one you are in matters more than your performance:
| Setting | Gross/month |
|---|---|
| Sparkasse (TVöD-S, typically EG 6–9a) | €3,240 – €4,980 |
| Private bank (AGV Banken tariff), entry | €3,200 – €3,800 |
| Private bank, experienced adviser | €3,900 – €5,000 |
| Firmenkundenbetreuer / specialist | €4,500 – €6,500 |
| Branch or team management | €5,500 – €8,000 |
The Sparkassen row is tariff-verified: TVöD-S shares the TVöD VKA scale, table valid 01.05.2026 – 31.03.2027, checked 2026-09. Eingruppierung varies by role and institution, so treat EG 6–9a as the usual band rather than a rule. Sparkassen also pay a Sparkassensonderzahlung on top.
The private-bank and specialist rows are market estimates. Genossenschaftsbanken (Volksbanken/Raiffeisenbanken) run their own agreements at broadly comparable levels. Investment banking and asset management sit outside all of this and pay on a different scale entirely.
Demand and outlook — read this honestly
The sector is shrinking. Branch closures have run for a decade, retail headcount is down substantially, and routine transaction work has largely gone to apps. Bankkaufmann/-frau is not a shortage occupation in the way nursing or driving are.
That does not make the qualification a bad bet — but it changes what a good bet looks like inside it. Demand is solid and growing in corporate banking, credit analysis, compliance, anti-money-laundering and regulatory reporting; it is weak in branch retail service. The qualification is a strong foundation; a career planned around a branch counter is not.
Foreign candidates
- To work: no recognition legally required for the title.
- To advise: you need the Sachkundenachweis and BaFin registration. A foreign banking qualification does not automatically satisfy this, and German product, tax and regulatory knowledge is the substance of it.
- For the visa: IHK FOSA equivalence assessment. A foreign finance degree may instead be assessed via anabin, which can open the EU Blue Card at specialist and corporate-banking salary levels.
- Language: C1. Advisory conversations carry legal weight and are documented; the compliance paperwork is dense. English matters in corporate and investment banking, not in retail.
Pitfalls
- Sparkasse vs. private vs. genossenschaftlich determines pay, culture and security. Understand which you are applying to — they are not interchangeable.
- Sales targets in retail advisory are real and have driven repeated mis-selling controversies. Ask how performance is measured before signing.
- BaFin registration follows you. Complaints are recorded against your entry.
- Branch retail is the shrinking end of a shrinking sector. Specialise early.
