Straßenbauer/in und Beton- und Stahlbetonbauer/in (Road Builder; Concrete and Reinforced Concrete Worker)

The two trades that build infrastructure rather than buildings. Written together because they share an Ausbildung family, a tariff world and — unusually for the Handwerk — an employer profile: municipalities and large contractors, not small Betriebe. Demand is driven by Germany’s bridge, rail and grid programmes, which is a different economy from the housing market that governs the rest of the Bauhauptgewerbe.

Official titles Straßenbauer/in · Beton- und Stahlbetonbauer/in
Protected title No — but Anlage A: Straßenbauer in its own right, Betonbauer under Maurer und Betonbauer
Category skilled-trades (Bauhauptgewerbe)

Two trades, one structure

Straßenbauer/in Beton- und Stahlbetonbauer/in
Builds Roads, paths, squares, drainage, kerbs Structures in in-situ and precast concrete
Core skills Setting out and levels, base layers, Asphalteinbau, Pflasterarbeiten, edge and drainage detail Schalung (formwork), Bewehrung (reinforcement), pouring, curing, finishing, precast erection
Typical projects Municipal streets, motorway sections, cycle infrastructure, site access Bridges, tunnels, retaining structures, industrial floors, wind-turbine foundations, multi-storey frames
Stage-2 qualification Tiefbaufacharbeiter/in Hochbaufacharbeiter/in

Both run through the staged Bau Ausbildung described in Maurer: a common first year, a recognised intermediate qualification after the second, the full trade after the third, with much of the training funded through the SOKA-BAU levy.

Pflasterarbeiten deserve a note of their own. Laying setts and paving by hand is a genuine craft, it is what most people picture when they think of this trade, and it is the part most exposed to knee and back injury over a career.

The employer difference

Most Handwerk trades in this repo mean a small firm with a Meister who owns it. These two frequently do not:

Employer What it means
Large contractors (the national and international construction groups) Tariff-bound, structured career paths, mobility across regions, long framework contracts
Municipal Bauhof / Straßenbauamt TVöD, verifiable pay, regular hours, local work, a pension arrangement, and no winter uncertainty
Autobahn GmbH and state road authorities Public employment on federal and state roads
Small specialist firms Paving, drainage, private access works

The municipal route is the underrated one. For anyone who wants construction work without the away-site life, the working-time account and the winter Kurzarbeit, a Bauhof post is tariff-paid, local, and on the verified TVöD scale — EG 5–7, €3,124 – €4,045 (valid 01.05.2026 – 31.03.2027) — with the security that goes with it.

Hazards specific to these trades

  • Live traffic. Working beside moving vehicles is the leading cause of death in road construction. Site protection under the German road-works rules is a trained, documented discipline, and the person setting out the signing carries responsibility for it
  • Hot asphalt — burns, bitumen fume, and paving in summer heat
  • Teerhaltiger Straßenaufbruch — old road layers containing coal tar are carcinogenic, and removing them is a notified procedure with mandatory protective measures. Never treat planings from an old road as inert
  • Quarzfeinstaub from cutting and breaking concrete, the cause of silicosis, with dust-suppression obligations that are inspected
  • Hand-arm vibration from breakers and compactors, and the noise that comes with them
  • Falls into excavations and trench collapse in the drainage work

Most of these trades’ people also hold short tickets — earthmoving plant, forklift, traffic management — which are quick, employer-funded, and the usual route to a pay step.

Pay

Market estimate, except the municipal row. The AEntG Bau-Mindestlohn is the floor and is not quoted here.

Stage Gross/month
Tiefbau-/Hochbaufacharbeiter (after 2 years) €2,800 – €3,300
Qualified, entry €3,100 – €3,800
Experienced, with plant or formwork specialism €3,700 – €4,500
Polier €4,200 – €5,300
Meister, employed €4,400 – €5,600
Municipal Bauhof (TVöD EG 5–7) €3,124 – €4,045

Contractor work adds Auslösung and travel allowances — large projects mean long-distance working and weeks away — plus the 13th month and SOKA-BAU’s holiday and pension. Municipal work trades those away for predictability.

Demand and outlook

The strongest and most reliably funded demand in the whole construction section, and it is not housing.

  • Bridges. Germany has a large, documented backlog of motorway and rail bridges requiring replacement or strengthening, with a multi-year programme and money behind it. This is the single biggest driver for Beton- und Stahlbetonbauer.
  • Rail. The corridor renewal programme takes whole lines out of service and rebuilds them, which is concrete, track bed and road access all at once.
  • Grid and energy. Transmission lines, substations, wind-turbine foundations.
  • Water and sewer renewal, which is municipal, unglamorous and endless.

None of this depends on interest rates or housing demand the way the rest of the Bauhauptgewerbe does — which makes these two trades the counter-cyclical choice inside a sector that is otherwise having a difficult decade. The constraint is people: the shortage of qualified Tiefbau workers is severe and is itself a reported reason for projects running late.

Foreign candidates

  1. To work: no recognition required.
  2. For the visa: yes — equivalence through the Handwerkskammer, or IHK FOSA where your qualification is an industrial one. Check which applies before filing.
  3. To run a business: the Meisterbrief, or the alternatives in the Meister file.
  4. Language: B1–B2. Setting out, levels, traffic-management briefings, and — for the municipal employers — dealing with residents.
  5. Visa: §18a, §16a, or §26(2) BeschV.
  6. Plant and traffic-management certificates are German and will be re-sat.

Pitfalls

  • Contractor life means away-site life. Ask how many weeks a year, and what the Auslösung actually is, before accepting.
  • The municipal route is easy to overlook and is frequently the better job.
  • Old road surfaces can be carcinogenic. If nobody has tested the layers before you break them out, that is a serious failure and not your risk to absorb.
  • Knees and back. Paving and reinforcement fixing are the two hardest things on the body in this repo. Plan toward plant operation, Polier or Vermessung.
  • Winter differs by employer. Municipal work continues — often as winter road service — while contractor work goes to Saison-Kurzarbeitergeld.
