The core trade of the Bauhauptgewerbe, and the standard entry point into German construction — including for people arriving without a qualification at all. Read The Bauhauptgewerbe first: holiday, minimum wage, winter and the identity of your employer all work differently in construction, and that file carries the load for every trade here.

The Stufenausbildung — construction trains differently
The Bau trades share a staged Ausbildung that the rest of the Handwerk does not:
| Stage | Result |
|---|---|
| Year 1 | Common construction basics, shared across all Bau trades, much of it in an inter-company training centre (ÜBA) rather than on site |
| Year 2 | Hochbaufacharbeiter/in — a recognised qualification in its own right. You can stop here |
| Year 3 | The full trade: Maurer/in |
Two consequences worth knowing. The intermediate qualification is real, so leaving after two years is not leaving with nothing — but it is a lower Lohngruppe and it is not the trade. And the ÜBA year is funded by the SOKA-BAU levy, which is why construction training is broad and standardised where other trades depend on whatever their employer happens to build.
Construction apprenticeships are the best paid in Germany. Training pay in the Bauhauptgewerbe runs well above the statutory minimum and above most industrial rates — a deliberate recruitment instrument in a sector that struggles to attract people.
What the job involves
- Mauerwerk — brick, block and natural stone, load-bearing and non-load-bearing
- Beton- und Stahlbetonarbeiten — formwork, reinforcement, pouring and finishing. In practice a large share of modern Maurer work is concrete, not brick
- Estrich, Putz, Abdichtung — screed, render and waterproofing where not subcontracted
- Dämmung — insulation systems, now a large and growing share of the work
- Sanierung und Umbau — the renovation of existing structures, including historic fabric, which is where the craft content is highest
- Setting out, levelling, reading structural drawings, and increasingly digital setting-out
Sibling trades diverge from here: Beton- und Stahlbetonbauer specialise in reinforced concrete structures, prefabricated elements and infrastructure; Feuerungs- und Schornsteinbauer in industrial linings and flues.
The unqualified route, and why it is in this file
Most German trades have one way in. Construction has two, and the second is Bauhelfer — site labour, no qualification, legally normal and extremely common.
It is also where the sector’s problems concentrate: subcontracting chains, posted workers on paper-thin arrangements, hours unrecorded, and entitlements that exist in law and not in practice. The Bauhauptgewerbe reference sets out what applies regardless — the AEntG minimum wage, SOKA-BAU holiday, German working-time rules, BG BAU accident cover from the first hour — and what to check before signing.
The honest framing: Bauhelfer work is a way into the sector and a way to be exploited in it, and which one it turns out to be depends almost entirely on the employer. Moving from Bauhelfer to a qualification — via an Umschulung, or the Externenprüfung route for people with long site experience — is the single best thing someone in that position can do, and it is fundable through a Bildungsgutschein.
Pay
Market estimate, positioned against the Bau tariff structure. The sector’s AEntG minimum wage — two Lohngruppen, both above the statutory minimum — is the floor, and it is a perishable figure that this repo does not quote; check it at soka-bau.de.
| Stage | Gross/month |
|---|---|
| Bauhelfer (Lohngruppe 1) | At or near the Bau minimum |
| Hochbaufacharbeiter (after 2 years) | €2,800 – €3,300 |
| Maurer/in, qualified | €3,100 – €3,800 |
| Experienced, Vorarbeiter | €3,700 – €4,400 |
| Polier | €4,200 – €5,200 |
| Meister, employed | €4,400 – €5,600 |
What the table leaves out, and it is a lot: Auslösung and travel allowances on away sites, partly tax-free; Bauzuschläge; a 13th month under the sector agreement; and the SOKA-BAU holiday and supplementary pension, which are real value that never appears on a payslip as salary. Construction pay is understated by a straight monthly comparison more than any other trade in this repo.
Against that: the working-time account, which banks summer overtime rather than paying it, and winter months at Saison-Kurzarbeitergeld rather than full pay.
Demand and outlook
Split, and the split is the whole story.
- Residential new-build is weak. The contraction from 2023 — interest rates, material costs, regulatory cost — cut housing starts sharply and has not recovered to the political targets. Firms exposed to speculative housing have shed staff.
- Infrastructure and public building are strong, funded and long-running: bridges, rail, water, schools, hospitals.
- Sanierung and energy retrofit are the growth area, driven by the GEG and by an ageing building stock. This is increasingly where a Maurer’s career is.
- Demographics are the sector’s real constraint. The workforce is old, entrant numbers have fallen for decades, and the shortage of qualified Bau tradespeople is structural rather than cyclical — which is why pay and training rates have risen even in a weak market.
Foreign candidates
- To work: no recognition required. Anlage A binds only self-employment.
- For the visa: yes. §18a needs a recognised equivalent, assessed by the Handwerkskammer — see recognition authorities.
- To run your own business: the Meisterbrief, or one of the routes around it in the Meister file — including the §7b Altgesellenregelung for a Geselle with six years’ experience.
- Language: B1–B2. Site instruction, safety briefings and coordination. The Berufsschule, if you train here, is unadapted German.
- Visa: §18a with recognition, §16a to train here, or §26(2) BeschV for Western Balkans nationals — a route heavily used in construction.
- Know whether you are employed or posted. If a foreign firm is sending you to a German site, read the posted-worker section of the Bauhauptgewerbe reference before you travel.
Pitfalls
- Claim your SOKA-BAU balance if you leave the industry or the country. Large sums go unclaimed every year.
- A “seasonal” contract that ends each autumn is a warning sign — the sector has funded instruments precisely so that does not have to happen.
- Check which agreement the contract names. Bauhaupt, Ausbau and the specialist trades are different tariff worlds.
- The physical toll is the career’s limiting factor. Plan a route to Polier, Meister, Bauleitung or Bauzeichnen before your back makes the decision for you.
- Wet-cement burns and silica dust are the quiet injuries of this trade, alongside the dramatic ones. BG BAU’s rules are not paperwork.
