Bauzeichner/in (Construction Draughtsperson / BIM Modeller)

The desk-side counterpart to the construction trades: an IHK Ausbildung, not Handwerk, producing the drawings that architects and engineers design and that Maurer and Zimmerer build from. The job title still says “draughtsperson”. The work has largely become modelling.

Official title Bauzeichner/in
Protected title No
Category engineering
Typical qualification Duale Ausbildung, 3 years
Examining body IHK
Regulated No
Last reviewed 2026-09

Specialisations

Certified on the qualification — you choose a Fachrichtung during the Ausbildung and it appears on the certificate:

Fachrichtung Work Sits with English
Architektur Floor plans, sections, elevations, Genehmigungs- and Werkplanung Architekt/in Architect
Ingenieurbau Schal- und Bewehrungspläne — formwork and reinforcement drawings for concrete structures Beton- und Stahlbetonbauer, structural engineers Road Builder; Concrete and Reinforced Concrete Worker
Tief-, Straßen- und Landschaftsbau Roads, drainage, earthworks, site plans, longitudinal sections Straßenbauer, municipal engineering Road Builder; Concrete and Reinforced Concrete Worker

The Ingenieurbau Fachrichtung is the most technical and the best paid; reinforcement drawings are a skill that takes years and that a structural engineer will not do themselves.

Confusable titles

Title Reality
Technische/r Systemplaner/in The renamed Technischer Zeichner, since 2011, with Fachrichtungen for building services, steel and metal construction and electrical systems. Different Ausbildung — building services, not the building
Bautechniker/in A Fortbildung above the Ausbildung — Techniker level, closer to site and project management
CAD-Fachkraft A short course, weeks not years. Not a recognised qualification
Architekt/in Five years of study plus practice. A Bauzeichner is not a junior architect, and the route between them runs through a university
BIM-Koordinator/in A role, not a qualification — and the natural next step from here

What the job involves

  • Genehmigungsplanung — the drawing set submitted for building permission, signed off by someone with Bauvorlageberechtigung (not you; see Architekt)
  • Werk- und Detailplanung — the drawings actually built from, at the detail where things go wrong
  • Bewehrungspläne and Schalpläne, with bar schedules
  • Mengenermittlung — quantities for tendering, under DIN 276 and DIN 277
  • BIM modelling and coordination — building a 3D model with data attached, running clash detection between architecture, structure and services, and keeping the model consistent with what everyone else changed this week

Tools: Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD, Allplan, ArchiCAD, Vectorworks, Solibri and BIM collaboration platforms.

The BIM transition — the whole outlook in one paragraph

Large public clients in Germany, including federal infrastructure, now require BIM on major projects, and the private sector has followed on anything substantial.

That splits this occupation cleanly in two:

  • Routine 2D drafting is the part with a problem. It is repetitive, increasingly generated from models rather than drawn, and it is the part that offshoring and automation reach first.
  • Modelling and coordination is the part with a future. It requires understanding how a building goes together, which trades conflict, and what a contractor will actually do with the information. That is judgement, and it is scarce.

Someone entering this occupation now should treat BIM competence as the qualification and the Ausbildung as the entry ticket. The repo flags automation exposure honestly elsewhere — Büromanagement and banking — and the same applies here, with the difference that the escape route is unusually clear and unusually well paid.

Pay

Market estimate, except the public-sector row. Architecture and engineering offices are among the least tariff-covered employers in this repo — see Architekt — so there is no binding scale.

Stage Gross/month
Entry €2,800 – €3,400
Experienced €3,400 – €4,200
Ingenieurbau specialist (Bewehrung) €3,800 – €4,600
BIM-Koordinator/in €4,500 – €5,800
Bautechniker/in €4,200 – €5,400
Public sector — Bauamt, TVöD EG 6–9a €3,240 – €4,980

The public-sector row is the verified TVöD VKA scale, valid 01.05.2026 – 31.03.2027, and as with several other occupations here it is the steadier employer: municipal building departments, state road authorities and Autobahn GmbH all employ Bauzeichner.

Demand and outlook

Good, with the split described above. Construction’s weak new-build market has cooled hiring in architecture offices, while infrastructure, renovation and public building continue — the same division recorded in Maurer and Straßenbauer.

BIM competence is the scarce thing, and the shortage is acute enough that people move from drafting into coordination within a few years. The ladder upward — Bautechniker, BIM management, or a Bauingenieurwesen degree via the Aufstiegsstipendium — is well trodden and funded.

Foreign candidates

  1. To work: no recognition required. Unregulated, and the output speaks for itself — a portfolio matters more here than in most occupations in this repo.
  2. For the visa: yes. §18a needs a recognised equivalent, assessed by IHK FOSA.
  3. Language: B2. Drawings are annotated in German, the norms are German, and coordination with site is conversational.
  4. German norms are the gap. DIN 276/277, the Landesbauordnung drawing requirements and German reinforcement conventions differ from most countries’ practice and are what an equivalence assessment will find missing.
  5. Visa: §18a, or §16a to train here. No Blue Card.
  6. A foreign engineering or architecture degree may be worth pursuing through §18b and the Ingenieur title instead — check before accepting a drafting role, because it is easy to get stuck below your qualification.

Pitfalls

  • Do not accept a drafting job if you hold a degree without understanding what it costs you. This occupation is a common landing place for foreign-trained architects and civil engineers, and leaving it is harder than not entering it.
  • Learn BIM early. The 2D half of the job is the half with a timer on it.
  • Choose the Fachrichtung deliberately — it is on the certificate and it steers the first decade.
  • Office pay is weakly regulated. The public sector pays a verified tariff for the same work; compare before assuming a private office pays better.
  • Software matters to employability in a way it does not in most trades. Revit and Allplan skills are not interchangeable on a CV.
