Gärtner/in (Horticulturist / Landscape Gardener)

Seven Fachrichtungen under one job title, and they are not variations on a theme — the largest, Garten- und Landschaftsbau, is a construction trade in all but name and is booming on urban greening and climate adaptation, while the production Fachrichtungen are under real pressure from imports and energy costs. Choose the Fachrichtung deliberately.

Official title Gärtner/in, with the Fachrichtung named
Protected title No
Category green (Grüne Berufe)
Typical qualification Duale Ausbildung, 3 years
Examining body Landwirtschaftskammer, or a state authority — see the sector README
Regulated No — but Pflanzenschutz-Sachkunde and chainsaw certification gate parts of the work

The seven Fachrichtungen

Certified on the qualification, chosen during the Ausbildung, and they lead to different industries:

Fachrichtung What it is Outlook
Garten- und Landschaftsbau (GaLaBau) Building and maintaining outdoor space: paving, walls, drainage, planting, irrigation, sports pitches. The largest by employment Strong
Baumschule Growing trees and shrubs for sale Mixed — demand for street trees is up, competition is hard
Zierpflanzenbau Glasshouse production of ornamentals Under pressure — energy costs and Dutch imports
Gemüsebau Field and protected vegetable production Stable; heavily seasonal-labour dependent
Obstbau Orchards and soft fruit Stable; same seasonal-labour model
Staudengärtnerei Perennial production Small, specialist
Friedhofsgärtnerei Cemetery planting and grave care Declining with changing burial culture

GaLaBau is where most of the money and most of the jobs are, and someone drawn to “working with plants” who ends up there will find themselves laying paving and operating a mini-excavator. That is not a complaint — it is the best-paid part of the trade — but it should not be a surprise.

What GaLaBau actually involves

Close to the construction trades in daily practice:

  • Wegebau und Pflasterarbeiten — paths, drives, terraces
  • Mauern, Treppen, Erdbau — retaining structures and earthworks, with plant
  • Entwässerung und Regenwassermanagement — increasingly the technical heart of the job as cities try to retain and infiltrate stormwater rather than pipe it away
  • Pflanzung und Pflege — trees, shrubs, lawns, meadows, and long-term maintenance contracts that are the sector’s stable revenue
  • Dachbegrünung — green roofs, alongside roofers
  • Baumpflege — tree care, pruning, felling, with chainsaw certification and, for the climbing work, Seilklettertechnik qualifications
  • Sportplatzbau — pitches and their irrigation and drainage

The climate-adaptation growth story

This is the reason the trade’s outlook is better than its pay history suggests. German municipalities are under pressure to:

  • retain stormwater locally rather than discharge it — the Schwammstadt concept — which means infiltration systems, swales, permeable surfaces and tree pits designed to hold water
  • plant and keep street trees alive through hotter, drier summers, which has turned tree care and establishment maintenance into a specialism
  • cool built-up areas with green roofs, facades and shade planting

All of it is publicly funded, all of it is technical, and there are not enough people who can do it. Alongside that, private garden work has been strong for years.

Pay

Market estimate. The GaLaBau tariff is comparatively strong and widely applied in the sector; the production Fachrichtungen are much more weakly covered and sit closer to the statutory minimum.

Stage Gross/month
Production horticulture (Zierpflanzen, Gemüse, Baumschule), qualified €2,400 – €2,900
GaLaBau, qualified €2,900 – €3,600
GaLaBau, experienced or with plant and paving skills €3,400 – €4,200
Baumpflege / SKT climber €3,500 – €4,400
Vorarbeiter / Kolonnenführer €3,800 – €4,600
Meister, employed €4,000 – €5,000
Municipal Grünflächenamt (TVöD EG 5–7) €3,124 – €4,045

TVöD row verified for this repo, valid 01.05.2026 – 31.03.2027. Municipal parks departments are a steady, underrated employer in this trade, exactly as the Bauhof is in road building.

Qualification route and what sits above

  • 3 years dual, examined by the Landwirtschaftskammer or state authority
  • Above it: Gärtnermeister/in in the chosen Fachrichtung; Techniker in Landbau or Garten- und Landschaftsbau; or a Bachelor in Landschaftsbau or Landschaftsarchitektur — which connects to the Architektenkammer’s Landschaftsarchitektur register and is the design side of the same work
  • Certificates that pay for themselves: Pflanzenschutz-Sachkunde (with a three-yearly refresher), Motorsägenlehrgang, Seilklettertechnik SKT A/B, FLL-zertifizierte Baumkontrolle, and plant and machinery tickets. See occupational certificates

Foreign candidates

  1. To work: no recognition required.
  2. For the visa: yes — via the Landwirtschaftskammer or the state authority, not IHK FOSA or the HWK.
  3. Language: B1–B2. Safety, plant names in German and Latin, and — in GaLaBau — private customers, which raises the bar.
  4. Chainsaw and climbing certification are German and must be re-sat.
  5. Visa: §18a, §16a, or §26(2) BeschV.
  6. Seasonal harvest work in the production Fachrichtungen follows the 70-day model described in Landwirt/in — a different arrangement entirely from qualified employment.

Pitfalls

  • Choose the Fachrichtung with the outlook in mind. It is on the certificate, and moving between them later means retraining in practice if not on paper.
  • GaLaBau is construction work. Expect paving, excavators and weather, not borders.
  • Production horticulture pays poorly and is genuinely exposed to imports and energy prices. Be clear-eyed about it.
  • Baumpflege is the best-paid niche and requires certification you cannot improvise.
  • Winter varies by employer — GaLaBau firms often shut down or reduce hours; municipal employers redeploy to winter service.
