The repo already has the two electrical anchors: Elektroniker für Betriebstechnik on the industrial side and Elektroniker Energie- und Gebäudetechnik on the Handwerk side. This file covers what is left: the automation specialisation, the Gebäudesystemintegration qualification created in 2021, and Industrieelektriker, the two-year tier beneath all of them.

First, the rule that governs all of them
Electrical work in Germany is gated by competence, not by title. Under DGUV V3 and VDE 1000-10, only an Elektrofachkraft (EFK) may work independently on electrical installations. Everyone else is an elektrotechnisch unterwiesene Person (EuP) and may only carry out defined tasks under instruction.
Completing any of the qualifications below makes you an EFK for the scope you were trained in. It is the most consequential of the occupational certificates in this repo, because it decides who may legally touch the work at all — and it does not come with a foreign electrical qualification automatically.
Elektroniker/in für Automatisierungstechnik
The control systems, not the power. Where Betriebstechnik keeps a plant’s electrical infrastructure running, automation builds and programmes what runs on it.
- SPS/PLC programming — Siemens TIA Portal above all, plus Beckhoff, Rockwell
- Sensors, actuators, drives and their parameterisation
- Bus systems — PROFINET, PROFIBUS, EtherCAT, IO-Link
- Commissioning (Inbetriebnahme), often at the customer’s site and frequently abroad
- Fault-finding on running production, where the cost of downtime sets the tempo
- Functional safety — safety controllers, emergency-stop architecture, and the performance-level assessments that go with them
It is the most portable and best-paid of the electrical trades, and the one with the clearest route into engineering-adjacent work: Techniker, then automation engineering, without necessarily going through a degree. It is also the one most likely to send you abroad on commissioning trips, which suits some people and not others — and which carries tax-free Spesen that the pay table does not show.
The Handwerk has its own near-equivalent, Elektroniker Fachrichtung Automatisierungs- und Systemtechnik, with the same trap the repo records elsewhere: the industrial qualification pays more and confers no right to open an electrical contracting business.
Elektroniker/in für Gebäudesystemintegration
New in 2021, and the only genuinely new electrical trade in a generation. It exists because buildings stopped being electrically simple.
The work is the integration layer of a modern building: KNX, BACnet, Modbus and DALI; heating, ventilation, shading, lighting and access control brought under one system; energy management tying together heat pumps, PV, storage and EV charging; commissioning, parameterising and handing over the whole thing to a client who will need it to keep working for twenty years.
Two things make it worth knowing:
- It is a Handwerk trade (3.5 years, HWK), so it sits in the Anlage A electrical world — employment free, self-employment needing the Meister.
- It is where the Energiewende meets the building, alongside SHK and Dachdecker. Heat pumps, PV and charging infrastructure all need someone who can make the systems talk to each other, and there are very few such people.
Being new, it is also poorly recognised by employers and by foreign-qualification assessments. Expect to explain it.
Industrieelektriker/in — the two-year tier
A two-year IHK Ausbildung in two Fachrichtungen, Betriebstechnik and Geräte und Systeme. It is a full, recognised qualification — not a partial one — and it makes you an Elektrofachkraft for a defined, narrower scope.
This mirrors Fachlagerist vs Fachkraft für Lagerlogistik exactly, and the same advice applies:
| Industrieelektriker (2 yrs) | Elektroniker (3.5 yrs) | |
|---|---|---|
| Scope as EFK | Narrower, defined | Broad |
| Pay | Lower — a grade or two below | Higher |
| Progression | Credited toward the 3.5-year qualification | — |
| Visa (§18a) | Qualifies — it meets the two-year minimum | Qualifies |
Do not stop there if you can avoid it. The two-year route exists to bring people into the trade, and employers use it both to widen recruitment and — less benignly — to staff work at a lower grade. Continuing to the full Elektroniker qualification is normal, credited, and worth several hundred euro a month for the rest of a career.
Its one clear advantage: at two years it does meet the §18a threshold, which one-year qualifications elsewhere in this repo do not.
Pay
Market estimate. These are IG Metall / IG BCE occupations where they are tariff-bound, and as the sector README records, those agreements are regionally fragmented with employer-specific ERA grading — there is no single scale to verify against.
| Qualification | Entry | Experienced | Ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Industrieelektriker | €2,900 – €3,400 | €3,300 – €3,900 | €4,200 – €5,000 |
| Elektroniker Automatisierungstechnik | €3,400 – €4,000 | €4,100 – €4,900 | €5,600 – €7,000 (Techniker, Inbetriebnehmer, Projektleitung) |
| Elektroniker Gebäudesystemintegration | €3,000 – €3,600 | €3,600 – €4,400 | €4,300 – €5,400 (Meister) |
Automation is the highest-paying non-degree electrical route here, and commissioning work adds per-diems on top.
Demand and outlook
Strong across all three, for different reasons.
- Automation — reshoring, labour shortage and the push to automate production keep demand high, and the skill is transferable across industries and borders.
- Gebäudesystemintegration — demand outstrips the tiny number of qualified people by a wide margin, and every heat pump, PV array and charging point adds to it.
- Industrieelektriker — used heavily as a recruitment channel; secure, but it is a floor rather than a career.
The honest risk, as in Betriebstechnik: German industrial employment is under pressure from energy costs and the automotive transition, and plant closures do happen. Automation skills travel between sectors better than most, which is the best hedge available in this family.
Foreign candidates
- To work: no recognition required — except that you must be an Elektrofachkraft, and a foreign electrical qualification does not make you one automatically. Employers assess it, and may require documented German instruction or a bridging qualification. This is the real barrier, not the paperwork.
- For the visa: yes. IHK FOSA for the industrial qualifications, Handwerkskammer for Gebäudesystemintegration.
- Self-employment: only the Handwerk route leads there. The industrial qualifications confer no right to open an electrical business.
- Language: B1–B2. VDE standards, safety instruction and shift handover are German; commissioning teams abroad often work in English.
- Visa: §18a, or §16a to train here. Blue Card no.
- Hochvolt and other short tickets do not transfer — see occupational certificates.
Pitfalls
- Check which chamber and which system a vacancy sits in. The words overlap; the rights do not.
- The two-year qualification is a starting point. Get the continuation agreed in writing if an employer promises it.
- EFK status is scope-bound. Being an Elektrofachkraft for control cabinets does not make you one for building installations.
- Gebäudesystemintegration is new enough to be misunderstood by recruiters and by equivalence assessors. Bring the Ausbildungsordnung with you.
- Commissioning travel is a lifestyle, not an occasional trip. Establish how many weeks a year before accepting.
